Gaming Authority KSA extra alert to risks of increase in illegal gaming machines

(Netherlands).- The Dutch Gaming Authority (Ksa) is closely monitoring developments in the market for land-based games of chance. The market is under pressure, partly due to the increase in gaming tax. Several casino branches have had to close their doors in recent months. When gaming halls close and licensed operations stop, it is very important that the gaming machines present do not end up in the illegal circuit. The Ksa will discuss this with the license holders involved, provide information and, if necessary, take firm action.
The gaming machines of a closed gaming hall were recently auctioned. This involved professional equipment. It is important that buyers do not operate these gaming machines without the necessary permits. The Ksa has therefore sent all buyers a letter clearly explaining the rules.
In order to be allowed to place a gaming machine in a catering establishment or gaming hall, an operating permit must first be issued by the Ksa. If it concerns a gaming machine, a presence permit for the location must also be requested from the municipality where the provider wants to place the machine.
The operating permit is important, because various matters are tested with this permit. For example, an applicant must draw up a policy to prevent addiction and minors must not be given the opportunity to gamble on the machine. The integrity of the applicant, managers and managers of the location is also tested.
If the Ksa does find gaming machines in the illegal circuit, the supervisory authority will take firm action against it. To tackle this, the Ksa works intensively with the RIEC (refer to another website), the police and municipalities. For example, at the beginning of this year, the Ksa dismantled an illegal casino in Hoogeveen with the police. Dozens of gaming machines were found there. These were confiscated by the police.
The Ksa also has the authority to confiscate and destroy material. In the first week of 2025, the Ksa had previously confiscated gaming machines and a roulette table destroyed. These items were seized during an investigation in Papendrecht. The destruction prevents the machines from coming back into circulation.
The Ksa calls on citizens to report (refers to another website) any suspicions of illegally installed gaming machines or to Meld Misdaad Anoniem (0800-7000).
